How Is Society Destroying Young Girls’ Self-Esteem? When I was little, I wanted to become a model. I saw them everywhere and thought, â€Å"Wow, they’re so successful!† I used to look at their full bodies, clear faces, flat stomachs, and luscious hair and I would say, â€Å"That’ll be me when I grow up.† As I grew up, I saw that I was far from becoming a model; my appearance was nothing like theirs. This caused me to second guess my beauty and self-worth. If I couldn’t become a model, then would I ever be successful? Would I ever be considered pretty? Society states that in order for a woman to be beautiful, wealthy and popular, she needs to have the same body weight and appearance as a model (Van Vonderen). The average woman in America is 5’4† and 140 pounds, while the average model is 5’11† and 115 pounds (What Is Body Image?). That is the standard we need to achieve but it is unattainable because it isn’t realistic. It is the result of anorexia, photo shop and plas tic surgery, and yet women are still chasing this unrealistic, false perception of beauty. How can we show people that there is no perfect standard? The media has created this false notion of beauty, displayed by the actresses and models we see today. This image that it portrays, along with the insecurities of our mothers and the silence of our fathers, leads many young women to develop low self-esteem.
